Kombucha has exploded in popularity over the last decade, not only for its tangy, effervescent taste and gut loving probiotics but also for its unexpected role in natural skincare.
If you’re already brewing Kombucha at home, chances are you know what a SCOBY is (see our SCOBY gallery here if you don't), but did you know that there’s a powerful, sustainable way to put spare SCOBYs to good use — in your skincare routine!
In this blog post, we’ll explore the natural skincare benefits of Kombucha SCOBYs, including how they help support collagen production, encourage gentle exfoliation, promote detoxification, and even help balance the skin’s microbiome.
We'll also share some of our favourite DIY recipes, including under-eye SCOBY patches and blended SCOBY face masks infused with essential oils.

Why Kombucha SCOBYs Work for Skin
SCOBYs are rich in:
- Lactic acid: A gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that encourages cell turnover and brightens dull skin
- Acetic acid: Known for its detoxifying and astringent properties
- Probiotics: Helpful for balancing the skin’s natural flora and reducing inflammation
- Cellulose: The fibrous, gel-like structure of the SCOBY can act like a natural hydrogel patch
These components make SCOBYs effective for a variety of skincare needs:
- Gentle exfoliation
- Hydration and barrier support
- Microbial balancing (great for acne-prone skin)
- Smoothing texture and fine lines
- Brightening dull or uneven skin tones
1. Under Eye SCOBY Patches
Why use them?
SCOBYs are naturally cool, hydrating, and rich in nutrients that can help reduce puffiness, hydrate under-eye skin, and soften fine lines.
How to make under eye patches
- Cut slices from a fresh, thin layer of SCOBY, about the size of an under-eye gel patch
- Store the slices in the fridge for 15 minutes before use
- Place gently under your eyes for 10–20 minutes
- Remove, rinse with cool water, and pat dry
Optional soak: Store your SCOBY slices to reuse as needed soaked in cooled green tea for extra anti-oxidants and de-puffing, rose water for soothing and hydrating, chamomile tea for sensitive skin, or just plain Kombucha for toning and brightening skin.
2. Blended SCOBY Face Mask
Why it works
Blending the SCOBY creates a natural gel-like face mask rich in exfoliating acids, probiotics, and skin-loving vitamins.
DIY SCOBY Face Mask Recipe:
To make enough face mask for 5-6 uses, blend 3 tbsp of fresh SCOBY and then option to mix with:
- Half a teaspoon of high-quality olive oil or jojoba oil (dry or sensitive skin)
- 2 drops lavender essential oil (anti-inflammatory & calming)
- 1 drop tea tree essential oil (for oily or acne-prone skin)
- 1 tsp aloe vera gel
- 2 drops of witch hazel (non alcohol)
Instructions:
- Blend the SCOBY until smooth
- Stir in any extras
- Apply a thin layer to your face, avoiding eyes
- Leave on for 10–15 minutes
- Rinse with lukewarm water and follow with your usual moisturiser
- Store in the fridge and mix before each use
How often: Once a week for gentle exfoliation and hydration.
3. Exfoliating SCOBY Toner
Great for daily use. Lactic and acetic acids in the SCOBY can act as mild exfoliants, similar to expensive AHA toners.
How to make a SCOBY toner:
Ingredients:
- 100ml Kombucha (fermented 14+ days for higher acidity)
- 300 - 500ml water to dilute (tweak to suit your skin)
- 1 tsp rose water or witch hazel
- 2 drops chamomile essential oil (optional)
Instructions:
- Mix all ingredients together in a small glass bottle
- Use for up to 2 weeks
- Apply with a cotton pad after cleansing, once per day
Note: Always do a patch test first to avoid irritation.
4. SCOBY Infused Oil for Collagen Support
SCOBYs may support collagen synthesis thanks to their amino acid profile, probiotics, and hydrating effects.
How to make a SCOBY-infused facial oil:
Ingredients:
- SCOBY pieces
- 100ml sweet almond oil or jojoba oil
- Optional: Add a few drops of frankincense essential oil (supports cell regeneration)
Instructions:
- Add a chunk of fresh SCOBY to a jar and cover with oil
- Let sit in a warm, dark place for 2–3 weeks
- Strain the oil and transfer to a dropper bottle
- Use a few drops nightly after cleansing.
This oil helps seal in moisture, supports skin elasticity, and delivers antioxidants directly to your skin.
5. SCOBY Spot Treatment for Breakouts
Thanks to its antimicrobial acids and probiotic nature, your SCOBY can be a natural spot treatment for blemishes.
How to use:
- Cut a small piece of fresh SCOBY
- Apply directly to clean skin over the breakout
- Let sit for 10–15 minutes, then rinse
The acids help unclog pores while probiotics can support the skin's barrier function. You could also use pure blended SCOBY for this (see face mask recipe above). SCOBY paste will dry as it sits on the skin, helping to draw any infection or impurities out.
Storage & Safety Tips
- Never add your skincare SCOBY back into the jar where you make Kombucha
- Never apply mouldy SCOBYs to your skin
- Patch test first before using any mask or treatment
- Store SCOBY skincare products in a cool place, or the fridge (depending on what you've made) and always in clean glass jars or bottles with air tight lids
